Late August through October is the ideal window for core aeration in the Greater Toronto Area. At this point, GTA lawns are still actively growing, soil temperatures are warm enough for rapid recovery, and weeds have stopped germinating — meaning your grass fills in without competition. Early spring (May) is a secondary window if your lawn is severely compacted from a heavy winter.
Core aeration uses hollow metal tines to pull small plugs of soil out of your lawn, creating channels 3–4 inches deep. These channels allow air, water, and fertilizer to reach the root zone directly instead of running off compacted clay. GTA lawns are built on some of the heaviest clay soil in Ontario — after a few seasons of foot traffic, that clay locks up tight. Aeration breaks the cycle and is the single highest-ROI service you can do for a struggling lawn.
Aerate first, then overseed immediately after. The holes created by core aeration give grass seeds a protected pocket of direct soil contact — dramatically improving germination rates compared to spreading seed on a solid surface. We offer overseeding as an add-on service. If you want both done in the same visit, mention it when you book.
