End-of-Season Lawn Care in the GTA: How to Put Your Lawn to Bed

A lawn prepared for the end of the fall mowing season

The end of lawn mowing season is a transition, not a single date on the calendar. Across Toronto, North York, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham and Scarborough, a mild autumn can keep grass growing longer than expected. Use the condition of your lawn—not just the month—to decide what still needs doing.

    1. Let grass growth decide the final mowing date

Keep mowing while your lawn is actively growing and the ground is firm enough to work on. As growth slows, space out visits instead of cutting on a fixed weekly schedule. A sheltered city yard and an exposed suburban property may finish the season at different times.

Avoid mowing frosted, frozen or waterlogged grass. Wait for frost to lift and the surface to dry. If another mild spell produces noticeable growth, a later tidy-up cut may still be useful.

    2. Give the lawn a tidy final cut without scalping it

For many established cool-season lawns, a final height around 2.5–3 inches is a useful starting point; adjust for your grass type and existing mowing height. Reduce height gradually if needed, and never remove more than roughly one-third of the blade in a single cut.

The aim is an even lawn, not the shortest possible lawn. Cutting too low can stress turf just as growth and recovery are slowing. Remove thick clumps of clippings rather than leaving them to mat down.

    3. Clear heavy leaves before they become a wet blanket

A few scattered leaves can often be finely mulched with a mower while the lawn is dry. Dense layers should be raked, collected or bagged. You should still be able to see grass through any shredded leaf material left behind.

Pay attention to corners, fence lines and shaded patches where wet leaves collect. Revisit these areas after windy days instead of assuming one cleanup will catch every leaf.

    4. Keep drainage and access areas clear

Clear leaves and loose debris from walkways, driveway edges and accessible surface drains. Keep piles away from storm grates and do not blow leaves into the road or onto a neighbour’s property.

Put away hoses and loose toys, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for winterizing irrigation and equipment. Leave roof-level gutter work and other fall-risk jobs to appropriately equipped professionals.

    5. Be selective about late-season treatments

Fertilizer is not automatically needed because the calendar says fall. Consider the lawn’s condition, previous applications and soil-test recommendations. Follow the product label and local rules, and do not apply to frozen ground or before heavy rain.

If the normal establishment window for overseeding has passed, plan spring repairs rather than expecting seed to establish before winter. Bare spots, persistent puddles and heavy shade are worth noting now for next season’s plan.

    6. Separate this year’s cleanup from next year’s mowing plan

Seasonal lawn mowing plans are moving to the 2027 waitlist. One-time lawn mowing and fall cleanup quote requests are still open, with work subject to weather, lawn condition and availability.

If your lawn only needs one final visit, ask for a one-time mowing quote. If leaves, beds and hard surfaces also need attention, explain the full scope when requesting fall cleanup. Joining a waitlist is not a confirmed booking or guaranteed start date.
